Stump Grinding FAQ & Pricing

Straight answers to what everyone asks before booking. Anything else — call (248) 544-1518.

How much does stump grinding cost?

Most single residential stumps in our area run $150–$400. The standard formula: $3–$7 per inch of diameter at the widest point at ground level (bark to bark, including the flare). The $150 minimum visit charge governs small stumps, and the per-inch rate climbs toward the top of the range as diameter and grind time grow.

Stump diameterTypical price
Under 12″$150 (minimum)
12–24″$150–$250
24–36″$250–$400

What moves the number: deep grinds for replanting add 25–50%; hard access costs more; and multiple stumps drop the per-stump price hard — see multi-stump pricing.

Stump grinding vs. stump removal — which do I need?

They're two names for what almost everyone needs: the stump gone, below grade, permanently. Grinding is how modern stump removal is done. The exception: if you're pouring concrete or building directly over the spot, the buried root ball needs excavation by a sitework contractor — we don't offer that, we'll tell you if you need it, and we'll grind everything outside the footprint.

What happens to the roots?

Lateral roots stay in the ground and decay naturally over 5–10 years — below grade, invisible, harmless for grass, mulch, or garden beds. Invasive resprouters (poplar, black locust, tree-of-heaven) get root chasing so they don't sucker.

What do I do with the hole and the chips?

Don't rake the chips back in and cap with an inch of soil — they settle and the grass yellows. Remove most chips, backfill with screened topsoil in tamped layers, overfill an inch, and seed in September (best) or spring. Chips work fine as pathway mulch or compost.

Can I replant a tree in the same spot?

Yes — ask for a deep grind (12–18″) before we start, clear old chips from the planting zone, and offset the new tree 2–3 feet from the old center. Lost an ash to the borer? Plant something else — and diversify beyond red oaks too, given oak wilt pressure here.

Do you check for utilities?

Yes — we coordinate MISS DIG 811 locates before deep grinds. It's Michigan law for excavation-depth work, and any operator who skips it is a red flag (so is a $75 “special,” which usually means a flush cut or no insurance).

How fast can you get here?

Quotes usually same-day from a call or photos. Scheduling runs 2–5 business days — faster for storm hazards. Call (248) 544-1518 with your city and the stump's tape-measure width for a two-minute ballpark.
